Echoes of misleading promises from before the last election.

GORDON BROWN: "All Labour proposals will protect and improve the quality of life for pensioners"

HE SHOULD TRULY HAVE SAID: "All my actions will undermine and minimise the quality of life for pensioners."

HE DIDN'T TELL US WHAT WAS IN HIS MIND:

"First,  I will ransack the pension funds by removing tax credits, this will make it harder to save into your pension fund over the years.

Next, I will refuse to restore the State Pension indexation link with earnings, even though your National Insurance contributions are earnings-linked. I know that in Opposition I protested loudly about the injustice of this, but now I've changed my mind.

Then, I will remove the Married Couple's Age Allowance, just as you are about to retire.

Then, I will ignore the need to abolish the obsolete, discriminatory compulsory  annuity purchase regulations, forcing you into a poor-value annuity, by age 75 latest.

Then, I will minimise the issue of gilts, in the interests of "Prudent Housekeeping" to pay off the national debt. I know this will collapse the  return on gilts to unprecedented low levels and ruin any decent prospect of buying an adequate annuity.

Then, I will generously give you free TV licenses when you make 75, but that will be paid for by removing the tax refunds on your investments, no matter how small these may be.

MR BROWN, if that is what you mean by protecting and improving the quality of life for pensioners, you must forgive us for viewing any of your FUTURE promises with the utmost scepticism.
